About the role:

This newly created senior role reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced ESG professional to make a genuine impact across Costa – a leading fresh fruit and vegetable producer.  The role involves working collaboratively with Costa leaders and specialists in Agronomy and Horticulture from our produce farms to design the ESG strategy and the key initiatives and actions required to deliver our ESG goals. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage the delivery of the ESG roadmap and projects and to put systems, processes and ways of working in place to improve accountability of individuals (e.g. employees, contractors, visitors) within their area of responsibility in relation to the organisation's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policies, procedures and mandatory requirements.
  • Work with business leaders to improve compliance of business activities and individuals (e.g. employees, contractors and visitors).
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to meet the organisation’s needs with a focus on: the sustainable management of our environment and natural resources for future generations; social equity and economic development; and achieving a sustainable advantage with consumers through ESG as well as minimising our business risk.
  • Provide specialist advice on the interpretation and application of external ESG standards, frameworks and rating methodologies; resolving complex or contentious queries and issues; and enabling others to take appropriate actions.
  • Review all elements and considerations in development of sustainability plans to gain buy-in for recommendations e.g. operational, consumer, customer and other stakeholders.
  • Work with internal marketing and communications to develop engagement plans and work collaboratively with other divisions to build a broader organisational understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and/or deliver a plan for significant aspects of external communications with guidance from senior colleagues e.g. be a key contributor to the Sustainability Report.
  • Identify leading edge practices of leading companies/ peers and identify emerging trends and likely regulatory requirements, both in Australia and globally.
  • Develop and/or deliver budget plans with respect to capex and expenditure guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Identify appropriate objectives, targets, KPIs, and metrics to measure performance.

About you:

  • Bachelor degree in environmental science, sustainability, agriculture, horticulture or other related field with subjects taken in Sustainability e.g. Commerce.
  • 6 – 10 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Exposure to multiple industries.
  • Experience with the environmental factors of ESG, ideally in Agriculture or Horticulture, including biodiversity, climate risk, decarbonisation, reporting standards and frameworks e.g. TCFD, SASB, GRI, CDP.
  • Demonstrated emissions, energy and sustainability experience.
  • Experience in water and waste management strategies.
  • Ability to think strategically and identify and create links between the business strategy and ESG frameworks.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in terms of dealing with evolving outcomes, timelines, dependencies and stakeholders.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders at an enterprise-wide level.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills, with a proactive approach to developing a network in the organisation and industry.
  • Understanding of broad ESG topics such as business ethics, ethical supply chain and human rights.
  • Exposure to or understanding of the unique rights of First Nations people to access, maintain and protect their land.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake occasional travel to Costa sites across Australia.
