WHS Manager


We’re Costa.  Australia’s leading grower, packer and marketer of premium quality fresh fruit and vegetables. Costa has an expansive footprint of domestic and international farms and horticultural properties which grow, package and market premium fresh fruit and vegetables.

Based in Emerald QLD, we are seeking a WHS Manager to provide leadership support and advice across all Costa 2PH farms and pack house operations. This role is focused on supporting day-to-day safety requirements, proactively building relationships and engaging with key stakeholders in the regions to empower our people for continuous improvement. 

In addition, close partnership with Costa leadership resources to drive the Costa’s WHS culture, strategies and systems for continuous health and safety improvement will be paramount.

About the Role

  • Partner and coach leaders and managers in understanding and achieving their responsibilities across workplace health, safety, and wellbeing through the WHS strategic Plan and Key Safety performance indicators;
  • Provide leadership and advice that encourages leaders, WHS Committees and Health & Safety Representatives, focused on creating a continuous improvement in culture and the implementation of best practice management systems in their workplaces;
  • Support leaders in monitoring, analysing and investigating reported injuries, incidents, and near misses and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are taken in consultation with the functional leaders and other Key Stakeholders to minimize risk. Prepare reports as required;
  • Analyse safety metrics to discover trends to identify continual improvement areas and develop plans in consultation with the functional leads and other Key Stakeholders to minimize risk;
  • Support the sites to undertake leading activities and to complete regular site inspections and ensure appropriate corrective actions are put in place to minimize risk;
  • Support the sites to complete Risk Assessments and to provide subject matter advice to the business on appropriate management and controls to minimize risk;
  • Maintain, review and support implementation of actions associated with the site risk register;
  • Support in audit and review processes;
  • Produce risk related reports for management review and analysis;
  • Support the site safety training in conjunction with the business unit requirements;
  • Implement and drive Health and Wellbeing initiatives;
  • Participate in the national Costa OHS Connect group and support the Costa Group Safety Management System to ensure BU compliance;
  • Support the sites to ensure that all employees, contractors and visitors have been inducted to the site and meet all the Costa requirements prior to commencement of work. Arrange and conduct inductions where required;
  • Support and assist injured workers to remain at or return to work in a safe manner;
  • Work with Managers, Supervisors and team leaders throughout the workers’ progress to Pre-Injury Duties;
  • Develop and implement individual return to work programs in consultation with the worker and treating professionals by attending medical appointments with the injured worker where necessary;
  • Lead and mentor safety teams across each operation in the regions; and
  • Provide support to Seasonal Pacific Workers from a safety and wellbeing perspective.
About You
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant WHS legislation, Codes of Practice and Standards relevant to the role;
  • Ability to develop and implement WHS goals, strategies, improvement plans;
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve outcomes through others;
  • Constructive approach to problem solving;
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team;
